Today's big question - do people actually drink Diet Coke because they like the flavour? I had a bad experience with Coke Zed at the weekend and am currently trying to drink Diet Coke and this is causing me ponderings.

Actually I prefer a Cola/Diet Cola 50:50 mix, but it's hard to get that in most places...

Haven't tried the new Coke Zero yet but intend to when I get the chance. I don't like the taste of diet coke, but feel I ought to since the full fat is so ful of sugar...

Coke Zero is horrible horrible stuff. It actually tastes ok as you're drinking it, but it has a really revolting aftertaste that had me desperately wanting to brush my teeth.

Ah - that doesn't sound so good! Any idea what's causing the aftertaste? Is it using different sweeteners to Diet Coke?

[livejournal.com profile] karne_k muttered something about different sweetners, but to be honest I was focussed on trying to get rid of the taste and was hence distracted. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coca-Cola_Zero) says it's using aspartame and acesulfame potassium.. but I don't actually know what Diet Coke uses and that page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diet_Coke) was a bit more complicated as there are lots of regional variations it seems. I'm also amused to see there's actually more caffeine in Coke Zero than regular coke (34.5 vs 35mg).

I think it's just a reformulation of diet Coke using the same sweetners. Certainly tastes a lot more like normal Coke but the aftertaste means I can't stand either of them.

Agree with cub, Pepsi MAx is the best of the diet colas - not that that's saying much...

I don't like either Coke or Pepsi. They're fizzy, for a start, and then either they're full of sugar, which tastes nasty, or they're full of artificial sweetener, which tastes nasty.

In an attempt to be more useful: I put diet tonic in my gin, because the sugar in the regular stuff takes away from the flavour of the gin. If I put a load of lime juice in, the regular stuff is OK.

I don't like cola at all, I drink doctor pepper (full sugar).

I also don't like people using the word "regular" to mean "ordinary".

I don't like Dr Pepper at all, I think it tastes like cough syrup, however I acknowledge that I'm in the minority there.

Regular vs ordinary - meh. To each their own. My lj, my language.

Is this because 'regular' has a technical meaning? I think you may be fighting a losing battle on that one...

My basic rule of thumb is that I prefer normal Coke to normal Pepsi, but I prefer the diet versions of Pepsi to the diet versions of Coke. I do prefer Pepsi Max to Diet Pepsi, but I tried out Coke Z recently and it was almost an effort to finish it (I had half of the bottle at work and the other half when I got home), so I won't be buying that again. Sadly the canteen here is Coke-variants only, so I'm stuck with Diet Coke rather than a Pepsi variant.

To answer your original question, I'm aware that some people do genuinely prefer the taste of diet versions (e.g. because they find the sugar version sickly), but I'm not one of them. However, I could happily drink 2L of Coke a day, which does nasty things to my WW points quota, so I make do with substitutes.

I sense considerable research has been performed here ;0)

We actually threw out the bottle of Coke Z 'cos no one could stand it.

It's a hobby :) Back when I was little, they used to have adverts on TV for the "Pepsi Challenge" (seeing whether random people in a shopping centre could taste the difference between Pepsi and Brand X in unlabelled glasses), and I always hoped that I'd get the chance to do that.

Regarding accessories, I always put ice in my Coke if I'm having it at home. More generally, I think all cola tastes significantly better if it's ice cold, either due to ice or because it's just out of a fridge.

I did the Pepsi challenge a long time ago. I chose Coke, and would now. Pepsi is nasty stuff. I drink more coke than is good for me but its difficult to get anything else worth drinking in a pub in North Wales (for someone who doesn't drink alcohol).

Sadly I can tell whether the coke has come from a bottle or a pump and how close to the bottom of the syrup container the spray is.....

The Cub Consortium Research Division has also decided that Pepsi Max is the best (or indeed least bad) of the diet colas out there. I haven't tried Coke Zero yet; I may have to out of curiosity, but I suspect it'll be a 330mL can given the bad reviews...

I can't abide Pepsi, or anything diet. Tastes of ick.

Well put, couldn't agree more myself. I eventually poured the rest of my can of diet coke down the sink yesterday.

All of those accessories I would add at some time or another; the ice would be the most usual.

I prefer coke to pepsi, and think that all of the diet versions taste of evil. I like coke with a big burger or similar grease, or if I need the sugar and caffeine hit. It should be very cold.

Here's a recipe to make your own coke syrup if you're that way inclined.
