What do you want from work?
Feb. 19th, 2011 06:59 pmFor a project at work we've been asked to think about our values, what's important to us, how that influences how and why you do things. As with most things I ended up over-thinking this and spending way more than the 'couple of minutes' I was supposed to spend.
I want to go to work each day to a job I find challenging and satisfying.
I will embrace responsibility and behave professionally. I will not be limited by the scope of my job description, taking on additional responsibility wherever I feel I can have a positive impact.
I want to work with people with diverse knowledge and experience and who want to be good at their jobs. I want to find ways to enable them to succeed and bring out the best in themselves. I want to facilitate communication and knowledge sharing, working in teams that inspire each other and find new ways to do things. I want to create a flexible working environment for myself and my colleagues which enables everyone to work to their full potential.
I want to be able to understand how things work so that I might make them better, creating order and structure, simplicity and clarity. I want to have the opportunity to be able to innovate, developing ideas and using different technologies to solve problems and make improvements. I want to embed processes and systems so that services are consistent and comprehensive, allowing people to get through frustrating tasks efficiently.
I do not want to be too scared, or too apathetic to challenge the status quo when I do not think it is effective. I want to work for an organisation that empowers its staff, rewarding and chastising appropriately and encouraging growth and development. I want to have the freedom and flexibility to try something that might fail.
I want my opinion to be listened to, to be respected for the knowledge, experience and skills I have. I want to develop a reputation as someone who is useful. I want colleagues to be able to come to me for assistance because they have confidence in the quality of what I do and in the way that I do it.
I want to leave work each day feeling proud of the work I have done.
